Ripple and the Language of Waves
So far we have spoken in images: the still surface, the touch, the ripple. Time to say it plainly: this is not a metaphor. The physics of waves is not a comparison but a literal description of how reality gathers itself from potential into fact. From a pond to an electron, the principle is one. We'll go step by step, slowly — this is the foundation, and everything ahead will stand on it.
Only let's agree at once on what here is literal and what is not. The waves are literal: interference, superposition, the pattern — measured physics, tested without us. But when I carry this mechanics over from particles to consciousnesses — that will be my wager. A hypothesis. The lens of this book. I won't hide the seam: wherever experiment ends and the carry-over begins, I'll say so plainly. And one more thing: when I say "not a metaphor" — I'm not saying "proven." I'm saying: it is not an ornament. An ornament you can throw out — the text will survive. Throw out this piece — and the whole model comes down.
1. Throw a Stone — What a Wave Is
Throw a stone into water — circles run out. That is a wave: a disturbance passed from point to point, carrying not the water itself, only energy and form. The water rocks up and down in place, while across the surface a drawing runs: crests and troughs. Remember the main thing: a wave is not a thing. It is an event. A process. A ripple.
And right away — the key to the whole book. The stone — the cause. The circles — the spread. And the shore they reach learns of the stone not directly, but through the trembling. So it is with reality: consciousness is the stone; the ripple is its effect; and everything we call "events" is the shores the circles have reached.
2. Two Waves → a Pattern
Throw two stones side by side. The circles will cross. Where crest meets crest — reinforcement; where crest meets trough — cancellation. And out of this overlay a pattern emerges: bands, petals, geometry. This is called interference.
Ripple upon ripple gives birth to a pattern. This is not poetry — it is physics. Two causes, two signals do not live apart: they add together. And the result of their adding is what we call an "event" at the point where they meet.
And here is the first thing to carry away from this picture — it will return as the central thought of the whole book.
The stones raised the waves. But the pattern that emerged — the stones did not choose it. Not one stone decided where the bright band would lie, and where everything would cancel into silence. The stone only threw its ripple into the shared water. And how the drawing would settle — that was decided by all the water at once: all the waves, all the shores, the whole still surface together. For the stone itself it is like a lottery: it added its circle — and does not govern the outcome. The ocean chose what the pattern would be.
Only let us say it honestly and precisely, without mysticism: "the ocean chose" does not mean the ocean has a will or an intent. No one sits behind the still surface picking the drawing on purpose. It is simply that the pattern belongs to the whole, not to the parts. It is the resultant of all the waves at once, and no single wave holds it on its own. And for a single stone this is indistinguishable from "the ocean willed it so."
Remember this feeling — it is the spine of the book. You are the stone. Your will is the thrown circle. And what the shared pattern of reality becomes — you do not decide. All the water decides. We will return to this more than once.
3. Light Is a Wave (Young, 1801)
Thomas Young passed light through two slits. On the screen appeared not two spots, but bands: bright, dark, bright. Why: to different points of the screen the waves from the two slits travel by slightly different paths; where the difference is exactly one wavelength — crest on crest, bright; where it is half — crest on trough, dark. Light behaved like a ripple on water — passed through both slits at once and overlaid itself upon itself. So light is a wave.
4. And Matter Is Also a Wave (de Broglie, 1924; electrons, 1927)
Bolder now. Louis de Broglie supposed: if light is a wave, then perhaps matter is too; every particle has its own wavelength. In 1927 Davisson and Germer sent electrons at a crystal — and got the same interference picture. Not an argument — a measurement.
The stone you threw into the pond is also a wave. Just very short and very dense. But the principle is the same.
5. One Particle at a Time (Tonomura, 1989)
And now the part that truly drives you out of your mind — and it is an honest, repeated experiment. Akira Tonomura sent electrons one by one, one at a time. Each struck the screen at a single point, like a pea. But over thousands of points, all by itself, that same striped pattern assembled.
There was nothing to overlay — a single particle. So each one, alone, passed through both slits at once and overlaid itself upon itself. It did not choose a slit — it passed through both. Until it was asked. This is superposition: everything at once, until it is made manifest. (Later this was repeated even with large molecules — the C₆₀ fullerenes, Zeilinger, 1999. It is not only the small that ripples.) This is not a hypothesis — it is an experimental fact.
6. The Observer Kills the Pattern
The same experiment, but put a detector at the slits: we want to know which slit the particle really passed through. We look. The interference vanishes. On the screen — two spots. The particle "chose," the superposition collapsed. Knowing the path killed the pattern. As long as no one watches — ripple and pattern; the moment the trajectory is known — concreteness.
7. The Honest Frame
Here we are obliged to stop and say it honestly — otherwise we will be torn apart, and rightly. The fact: the pattern is there; knowing the path kills it. Confirmed thousands of times. The interpretation is a matter of dispute. Most physicists: "observation" = simply measurement, interaction with an instrument (information leaks into the environment — this is called decoherence), consciousness has nothing to do with it. A minority (von Neumann, Wigner): it is consciousness itself that collapses the wave into a particle. We do not impose the answer — we leave the door open. But in any case one thing matters: observation — whether by instrument or by eye — gives birth to definiteness where there was none. For our model that is enough. (Whether consciousness takes part — that thread we will keep pulling further, marking honestly that it is a hypothesis.)
8. Render: The More Gazes, the Sharper the World
And the main conclusion, the bridge into the next chapter. Every consciousness, every act of observation — one more ripple, one more wave in the shared interference. The picture is not broadcast from some center — it is this overlay, the sum of all the waves at once. Where the overlay is denser — there are nodes, there the Fabric of reality is thicker, there the detail is higher.
A thousand witnesses in the square — and reality there is drawn out to the finest detail. A desert without life — and reality there is thin, almost transparent, almost potential. The world does not merely exist — it is rendered, and each of us is one of the processors, pulling its thread in the shared fabric.
I came upon this myself not in a textbook, but bringing frames to life in a neural network: I watched a scene emerge from noise — the sharper, the more rays were computing it. Not a revelation from the sky — I simply saw the mechanics with my own hands.
